About PERC

What is PERC?

Penobscot Energy Recover y Company L.P. (PERC), was organized in 1983 for the purpose of developing and owning a 25.3 MW, 1,000 ton-per-day, waste-to-energy facility, located in Orrington, Maine.  PERC processes over 300,000 tons of municipal solid waste (MSW) annually.

The PERC facility and the Municipal Review Committee (MRC) work in partnership to provide reliable, reasonably priced environmentally responsive waste disposal services to over one-third of Maine households.  In short, PERC converts waste to energy, reducing the space needed for landfill disposal by 90%.

Serving Maine Communities

The Penobscot Energy Recovery Company serves Maine communities in three important ways:
  1. Relieves communities of their waste disposal problems by providing a stable, long-range and low cost disposal option for one-third of Maine's households
  2. Through a 30-year electric supply contract with Bangor Hydro, PERC supplies renewable resource-based electricity to residences and businesses throughout central and eastern Maine
  3. PERC pumps $25 million into the Maine economy annually and provides quality jobs to over 77 employees

For every ten garbage cans of solid waste delivered to PERC, the waste-to-energy process reduces the volume requiring disposal at the landfill to just one garbage can of residue - a 90% volume reduction.

The members communities of the Municipal Review Committee (MRC) are proud to be a part of a solid waste management success with continuous focus on the public interest.
